Advantages
Different Types of Electrodes
Selection of Workpiece Material
Most spot welding is to weld one metal to another different metal. This application requires two different electrode materials. Another problem is that the workpiece is composed of different materials. For example, the pins of many axial electronic components are steel cores, with copper coating on the outer layer and tin coating on the outer layer. In most cases, the material of the workpiece determines the selection of electrode material.
For metals with low conductivity (high resistance), such as beryllium copper, platinum, nickel and steel, copper alloy need copper alloy electrode materials with high conductivity. The electrode with high conductivity will keep the heat on the work-piece contact surface instead of generating the heat on the electrode head.
High conductivity metals such as copper, some copper alloys and silver require low conductivity electrode materials such as tungsten copper, tungsten and molybdenum. The electrode head generates high heat, which is transmitted to the work-piece contact surface.
